Supported Python versions

The package consists predominantly of code written in Python, and the
following versions are supported:

* Python 3.8
* Python 3.9
* Python 3.10
* Python 3.11
* Python 3.12

Older Python 3 versions may also still work but are no longer included
in the automated tests.

Some of the utilities also use 3rd-party software packages, including:
